Tate decided to lock himself in the bathroom.
It was rather unconventional the way he did it and I'll applaud his unique follow through. He normally likes to open and close drawers and doors now. He thinks it's funny to shut me out. Normally this is not a problem. Today, needless to say, was a little different.
I went to the kitchen to pour a glass of water and make some breakfast (a bowl of cereal) which means that little man has a little freedom for about 2 minutes away from my watchful eye. When I look into the other room I notice the bathroom door shut. I try to open it and am halted by an open vanity drawer with a baby inside of it looking at me.
Now, at first I thought it was kinda funny and cute then my anxiety set in. I told him, "Okay Tate, get out of the drawer so Mommy can come in". Nope, no movement. Again, the anxiety is creeping up as I realize I can only get half my forearm in the door and there's no way I can get him out of the drawer or shut it. I try to figure out how to convince him to get out of the drawer. I tell him to go look at the bathtub. Nope. I stick a mini snack Chex bag (which he likes) under the door on the far side so he'd get out and I could shut the drawer. Nope. Nada.
At this point I start to get frustrated and yell at him. He cries. I feel bad-but mainly nervous. After about 10 minutes I go outside to see if I can open the window from there. Nope. I suddenly realize that I might have to break it. I don't want to do that because I don't want him to crawl over and cut himself up. But there's no way to open the door from the inside because the hinges are on the inside and I can't get him out of the drawer.
I walk back into the house and talk to him some more. Then I look under the door and see a little foot go to the floor. YES! Finally, he's decided to get out of the drawer. I grab the screwdriver I had and immediately start pushing the drawer back in. Once I got it closed I opened up the door and picked him up. He was so relieve, as was I, and we just relaxed for a moment. It was not a good feeling.
I know this will be a funny story for the future (and a valuable lesson to do a better job child-proofing) but for now my blood pressure is still high and my nerves are shot.
